Affixes

What they are

An affix is a random bonus rolled onto a weapon, ability, armor or ring when it drops, such as Keen II: +7% weapon damage or of Life III: +52 Max HP. The item stays what it is (a bow stays a bow, with its own stats); affixes come on top. Each affix has three strengths, I to III, each with its own range of values, and an item carries each affix at most once. The tooltip lists them, coloured by family.

Affixes roll on drops: enemy loot bags, quest rewards and set-piece chests. Tiered gear rolls from the first affix tier up (weapons from T7, armor from T7, abilities from T3, rings from T3); lower tiers never do. Untiered items roll nothing, except dungeon uniques with a pool of their own (below). Items crafted at the Archive's Smithy come bare.

Each extra affix is half as likely as the one before, up to 6. Half of all eligible drops have at least one.

How strong

The item's tier caps the strength its affixes roll at. Within the cap the strength is drawn by weight, so strong affixes stay rare even on top gear.

Every affix

The value is rolled within its strength's range. The item columns give each affix's share of the first pick on that kind of item; every further pick is drawn the same way from the affixes not yet on it.

Dungeon pools

Some dungeons' uniques roll exactly one affix of their own pool when they drop, never the ordinary ones, and pool affixes roll nowhere else. A loot bonus counts for its wearer only, and bonuses add up: two +10% make x1.2.

In loot bags and your inventory

Every item icon shows one pip per affix in its top-left corner, 3 to a row, coloured like the item's name in the tooltip. So a rolled drop stands out in a loot bag before you open the tooltip.

The Enchanter

In the Archive (the Vault), south of the Alchemy Lab. Put the item in your first inventory slot (the top-left of your bag, not an equipment slot), then step onto the Enchanter's pedestals: each one says what it would do to that item and what it costs. The currency is magic dust, shared by your whole account and shown in cyan beside your fame.

The grade is the item's step in the affix tiers. A buy is refused if the item in the slot changed since the pedestals were set up.

A dungeon unique (grade 3, strength I only) disenchants for 6 dust for its affix plus 20, rerolls for 32 and cannot be upgraded.
